Furnace Comparison- What Kind of Furnace Should I Buy?

There are a number of factors to take into consideration when installing a new home furnace. Among these, your home size, energy needs, efficiency standards are the most important. As price differences between furnaces can tally up to thousands of dollars, it’s always a good idea to put some good thought into what you truly need, and what model is best suited for your home. In this guide, we’ve accumulated information about how to find your home’s energy needs and BTU requirements, and created a handy product comparison for our energy-efficient Lennox products. Cozyworld is your top Lennox dealer in the Toronto area, offering qualified, Energy Star Certified Lennox heating and air conditioning units.

How to figure out your home’s needs:

To figure out the average heating capacity of your home, calculate your square footage. Homes will require between 40-50 BTUs, depending on the location you live in. Temperate climates such as Ontario will need the lower end of the range, while homes in Northern Canada will require up to 60 BTUs. Newer or recently remodelled homes, as well as those with insulated windows and doors will need less. Compare your home’s specifications and outfitting for the most accurate estimate.

How you calculate is you take your home’s square footage, and multiply it by the number of BTUs needed for you climate and purposes. So, a 2,500-square foot home in a Toronto climate will be calculated as follow:

2,500 x 40 = 100,000 BTUs

Keep in mind that your furnace’s AFUE rating will also have to be taken into consideration, because just because a furnace has a 100,000 BTU capacity doesn’t mean it will be able to heat your home fully. The AFUE rating is the efficiency of your furnace. Most of our products have an AFUE rating of over 90%, meaning they will heat 90,000 BTUs of your home’s total needs. Lower end furnace models may have a rating of only 70 or 80%. When shopping, adjust your needs for the AFUE rating of the products.

One of the more precise ways to determine the best furnace for your home is to do a load calculation. This can be performed by your contractor, and is the most accurate means of determining your heating needs. The load calculation is performed in various calculation software, and takes into account your home’s foundation, flooring, roofing, insulation, location, size, windows, doors etc. As your contractor to perform one of these calculations for you, when you’re looking to replace your furnace.
