Furnace Humidifier Takes Care of Low Humidity at Winter Time
Central Humidifier

Bypass Flow Through Humidifier
The most common type of furnace humidifiers installed is bypass flow thru type of humidifier. Most often the humidifier itself is installed on the return air duct. Hot air from the duct above the furnace (plenum) through the ByPass duct goes into the humidifier. Where it picks up water vapours and delivers them into the return duct. From there humidity get distributed throughout the entire house.
Water for humidification enters the humidifier at the top and excess of the water leaves through the bottom to the drain. No water is stored inside of the humidifier. Hence the "flow through" in the name.
Depending on the house structure and outdoor conditions this type of humidifier can maintain 25-30% humidity in houses up to 3,000 sq ft.
Power Humidifier
This type of humidifier does not need a bypass. It has a motorized fan inside. Which draws the air from inside of the plenum and expels the moisturized air back into the plenum.
Power humidifier produces more humidity than bypass humidifier.
The power humidifier needs more space on the ductwork that is not always available if the furnace room is finished tight without consideration for the future maintenance needs.
